EVALUATION TIMEEEEEE

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progresson from it to the full product?

Throughout this process, I would say that I have learnt a great deal and my knowledge began as very limited and lacking in any angle of professionalism and now it is to a much higher standard that I am proud of.
When we began the project I found that I struggled to come up with creative and successful ideas and when I was able to do this, I sometimes found it difficult to convey these ideas to my peers and to develop these into working products. Now, I would say that I am able to come up with ideas that challenge those that are currently existing within the industry and to develop them into a good film opening.
Our preliminary task consisted of a character walking into a room and having a conversation with another character. We went for the storyline of a girl being held hostage to try and make it more interesting to watch as the concept alone of the video isn't particularly interesting. We chose to not reveal to the audience what the girl was being held hostage for until towards the end of the clip to keep them intrigued and curious to watch more.
During this task, myself and Lily worked together to direct and work the camera which was quite effective because collectively we were able to find appropriate and fitting angles which benefited the piece most. Another aspect that was identified during the process was the difficulty of achieving good lighting and so when it came to filming my own film opening, I found that working outside midday was particularly successful and I was able to obtain the preferred final product.

I found that the tasks and lessons that I learnt prior to producing my own film opening were very useful when it came to actually producing it because I was able to utilise the different skills learnt and to develop/challenge these further.

Some things which I chose to develop and challenge were the ideas/themes/genres because this was not something that we had not done within our preliminary task.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

When constructing this product I learnt a great day about technologies. I used a wide range of technologies such as Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects, YouTube, IMDb, Google and a Canon HD camera. When carrying out research prior to constructing my media film opening, I utilised YouTube in order to look at existing products within the film industry and also film openings that had been produced by previous Media Studies students so that I was able to gain an understanding of what is successful and what kind of things I would be able to create.
When it came to filming, I found that the camera was very well suited to our task set because we were able to achieve some great results, particularly down to the clear picture quality that we were able to obtain; having said this the camera was also easy enough to use that there weren't any prominent difficulties, especially because we had used the cameras before when filming projects in class and in our 'The Hangover' project which we completed in groups.

Not only was I able to learn about technologies during the construction of my project but also how to develop the use of them into producing a successful and well-rounded film opening.

How did you attract/address your audience?
My aim was to attract the audience by setting the opening as very much open-ended in the way that the audience does not know the full story yet and/or what has happened to Eliza. I also like the way that from the opening credits the audience has to pay full attention because the dialogue/voice-over/narration begins at that point. The narration allows the audience to connect with her character and so it comes as a shock to find that she has had an accident.

I would like to think that the opening really gives the audience a lot to think about and they have a lot of connections to make. Upon review of my initial audience feedback I found that they wanted to find out what happened next, which is the sole purpose of a film.
“-I thought the voice over was really good – both funny and emotional which presents the character really well. Her speech presumably lays down the gauntlet for the rest of the film. I think one of the downsides is the lack of revealing of the character, although I really enjoyed it and it was a great production.”
“-Really good narration, gives it all the effect, the footage is quite non-descript, which really makes the narration powerful. The titles are really good and linger long enough to be able to read them and still keep up with the voice over. Would be really interested in watching the full length movie of this.”

When brainstorming and attempting to establish the genre and audience for my film I created an audience character profile that allows you to identify what kind of audience you want to target and how they will relate to the film. I decided that I would like to target the Mainstream Plus audience because they are primarily looking for good films however, they also try new things that aren’t similar to the more mainstream big ‘money-makers’.
Mainstream Plus? Genre: Drama, Romantic Comedy
Summer is a 24 year-old female with an English Literature degree. She likes mainstream films but also isn't afraid of watching crossovers and those which test the boundaries. She is quite girly but not soppy or pathetic. Her guilty pleasure is going to see rom-coms and dramas with her mum and younger sister who is at University studying Art Textiles. Summer likes films which are relatable to real life and which manipulate the audience's emotions through the use of music.

I feel that this is a fitting audience for my genre of film and it seems that the film would gain more of a female reception, purely because of it’s content however, it is down to personal preference and I believe that the film could take in a great audience.

Given that ‘A Day in the Life Of…’ is a low budget film and is my first production, I would say that it would not meet the high expectations that exist of high budget films which largely use CGI and consequently attracting a large audience and box office; therefore I think that it would be a media institution which also distributes independent and lower budget films. I feel that if my film was distributed by an institution like StudioCanal it would greatly benefit and a wider audience would also be achieved.
StudioCanal is a French-based production (as StudioCanal S.A.) and distribution (as StudioCanal Images S.A.) company that owns the third-largest film library in the world. The company is part of the Canal+ Group, owned by Vivendi SA. Studio Canal, formerly known as Optimum releasing, distributes creative films across all genres such as Bridget Jones’ Diary and many others; and releasing many independent films including foreign films.
Bridget Jones’ Diary had a budget of $26 million and took $281,929,795 at the Box Office and was distributed by Miramax Films and Universal Pictures.

EVALUATION TIMEEEEEE

Given that my film followed the Rom-Com genre, my media product represents females and the older generation of youth, i.e. adult-teens.
Character profile: ELIZA NIAMH MURRAY
Age: 18
D.O.B.: 28th December 1991 (Film set in 2010)
Star Sign: Capricorn
Nationality: British
Hair colour: Blonde
Eye colour: Hazel
Hometown: Rural village in Norfolk, originally from Yorkshire
Hobbies: Reading, listening to old music, being outside
Other siblings: None
Relationship status: Single

I chose to represent this particular social group because they are very relatable to, in the eyes of both adults and teenagers and so the target audience is quite broad and therefore a better reception for the film would be met. Although not a great amount of physicality is shown of the female protagonist, the audience is still able to establish that she is not of a lower class because she is in a nice countryside and from what you see of her clothing, she appears to be well-kept, and so this is representative of a middle class lifestyle, which is both relatable to for the audience and something to aspire to.

In terms of the rest of the film, social class is an aspect that I would have looked closely at because when Eliza has her accident, her life is affected in a very extreme way and this will impact upon everybody involved in her life. This would enable the audience to gain an understanding how people from different social classes have to come together in order to help fix and rectify certain things.

EVALUATION TIMEEEEEE

The genre that I chose when planning my film was a Romantic Comedy, more commonly known as a ‘Rom-Com’; they are typically light-hearted films with humorous plotlines that are centred on romantic ideals such as ‘that true love is able to surmount most obstacles’. Although I followed this genre, I wanted to challenge the concept by not displaying a possibly romance or even the female protagonist’s physicality to the audience within the opening two-minutes. My reason for doing this was because I wanted the audience to build up a rapport and understanding of Eliza’s character through her dialogue rather than establishing a stereotype or prejudgement of the character from just appearance alone; this also allows for some background to be established because it is her dialogue that captures the audience, this keeps them intrigued and interested to watch the rest of the film.
Another aspect that I chose to challenge was the range of shots that I used within my opening; I wanted to keep it simple, and so I didn’t use too many shots and when it came to editing I used effects such as a cross-dissolve in order to blend the shots together so that it flowed well as a transition and was easy to watch for the audience, rather than using snappy and fast-paced shots that would be typical of genres such as horror or action films.
Having said this, I have used and developed the typical forms and conventions of real media products within the industry by using non-diajectic audio within my opening; I did this in the form of music and Eliza’s voiceover. I believe that using the music allows emotion to be developed within the audience and this can strongly influence the effect of the film on the audience. A film that particularly influenced and inspired me was Bridget Jones’ Diary because within her dialogue and voice-overs she provides a very humorous and entertaining aspect and this fuels the popularity and success of the films.
One form that I chose to develop was the use of quotes from famous and well-known people from around the world within a film opening; a particularly effective example of this for me is Remember Me in which Robert Pattinson’s character has a fairly troubled lifestyle because of his father and he is able to gain inspiration and many life lessons from Gandhi. Remember Me is a 2010 American romantic, coming-of-age drama film directed by Allen Coulter, with the screenplay by Will Fetters. One particular quote is "Gandhi said that whatever you do in life will be insignificant but it is very important that you do it...". This quote relates to my media film because I am intrigued by the use of famous historical figures whose words are able to have a great and significant impact upon peoples lives.

“ In a typical romantic comedy the two lovers tend to be young, likeable, and apparently meant for each other, yet they are kept apart by some complicating circumstance (e.g., class differences, parental interference; a previous girlfriend or boyfriend) until, surmounting all obstacles, they are finally wed. A wedding-bells, fairy-tale-style happy ending is practically mandatory. ”

Level 3/Level 4: WHAT AM I AIMING FOR?

Level 3
The candidate is expected to demonstrate proficiency in the creative use of most of the following technical skills:
  • holding a shot steady, when appropriate;
  • framing a shot, including and excluding elements as appropriate;
  • using a variety of shot distances as appropriate;
  • shooting material appropriate to the task set;
  • selecting mise-en-scene including colour, figure, lighting, objects and setting;
  • editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer;
  • using varied shot transitions, captions and other effects selectively and appropriately for the task set;
  • using sound with images and editing appropriately for the task set
  • using titles appropriately.
Where a candidate has worked in a group, a proficient contribution to construction is evident.

Level 4
The candidate is expected to demonstrate excellence in the creative use of most of the following technical skills:
  • holding a shot steady, where appropriate;
  • framing a shot, including and excluding elements as appropriate;
  • using a variety of shot distances as appropriate;
  • shooting material appropriate to the task set;
  • selecting mise-en-scene including colour, figure, lighting, objects and setting;
  • editing so that meaning is apparent to the viewer;
  • using varied shot transitions, captions and other effects selectively and appropriately;
  • using sound with images and editing appropriately for the task
  • using titles appropriately.
Where a candidate has worked in a group, an excellent contribution is evident.

When I received my audience feedback, the mark and grade average that I received was 44.875, Level 3 (high level). This would be the kind of grade that I would like to receive and I think it represents the quality of the work that I managed to produce.

AUDIENCE FEEDBACK

-I really like the idea – it is really creative and I love how simple and expressive the shots are. The idea is really unique and the narration works effectively – it is well written and gives you a good idea of the background and the character. Seeing the credits at the top of the screen was sometimes difficult because of the trees but other than this, I really liked it!
-Like the ident. Goes straight in with the narration. Narration can be related to ‘Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging’. Does the film go with the narration? Would be effective if the car crash could be seen.
-I like the different shots. The ident looks really professional. Perhaps the narration is a bit fast? Overall, I like it and the music works well with the shots. Well done!
-Nice storyline – different opening yet simplicity is very effective because it allows the audience to focus on the dialogue. The narration could be slowed down, as at times it feels slightly rushed. Opening is very interesting and makes the audience want to know more about the story – I want to know what happens next! Could be a bit more variation of shots.
-Narration was cut off at the end, but I enjoyed it! There could be more variation in the shots. Good script, though a little rushed at times in reading.
-I thought the voice over was really good – both funny and emotional which presents the character really well. Her speech presumably lays down the gauntlet for the rest of the film. I think one of the downsides is the lack of revealing of the character, although I really enjoyed it and it was a great production.
-Really good narration, gives it all the effect, the footage is quite non-descript, which really makes the narration powerful. The titles are really good and linger long enough to be able to read them and still keep up with the voice over. Would be really interested in watching the full length movie of this.
-Good narration – very personal but I don’t think it quite fits with the video footage. Wider variation of shots could be used. Titles look very professional.
-Really gripping and intriguing. Really like the mise-en-scene and loved the narration. I think some of the narration was a little fast. Also, there aren’t many varied shots, but it’s really good!
-Cool production; although there aren’t many shots and shot selections, the narration is really effective. Good transitions between the video cuts, framing etc. To be picky, the music is a little sad to match the voice/narration. All in all, really good opening 2minutes, well done!:)
What people graded me...

40, 40, 52, 50, 43, 42, 45, 47 = 44.875 (Mean average) = High band 3

Editing update..

A number of problems have arisen from the editing process of my film opening - mainly due to the computers that we are using because my computer was repeatedly having malfunctions with Adobe Premiere Pro. This meant that the programme would crash and I would consequently lose my current work that was yet to be saved. However, after this happening 3 times I managed to work through the problem and have now been able to complete my editing!:)

I used a number of techniques/effects/transitions in order to edit my footage and I think that I have done this fitting with my opening because it is quite simple and not too complex and so I haven't used too many effects or irrelevant colours that don't fit with my theme or genre.
I originally had a lot of problems trying to create my heart rate monitor scan sequence. I tried to use Adobe Photoshop, After Effects and Premiere Pro and yet none of these were able to let me create the sequence that I had in mind and even drawing the scan was particularly difficult. I finally reached the conclusion that I was actually able to use the original scan image that I had created on SketchBookExpress app on my MacBook Pro. All I had to do was import this onto Adobe After Effects and then to place a blank white shape on top and to move it accordingly across the screen. I think it is actually quite effective and I was really glad to discover that I could construct it and include it within my film opening because it was one of my prominent intial ideas.

I also had a lot of struggle trying to find music for my opening that was copyright free and was fitting; but the actual problem was FINDING them because I didn't really know what I was looking for enough to be able to search for them. I stumbled around on a few websites and found my way onto 'http://www.jamendo.com/en' which allowed me to search for 'Royalty Free Music' and so I researched into piano instrumentals and managed to find a selection of appropriate songs. The one I chose to download was a piano instrumental called Oasis'Blue. However, after receiving feedback I might chose to change this later on.

EDITING TIME...

Printscreens of Editing

This is a snapshot of a still image that I have at the beginning of my film opening, I particularly like it because it has a very idyllic and almost surreal.

This is an example of the 'Cross Dissolve' transition that I am using within my film opening to fade between the scenes of footage and imaging. In this example it fades from an image of a field to one of a diary extract of Eliza's.

Revised script..

"A DAY IN THE LIFE OF..."
FADE IN:
EXT. COUNTRYSIDE - MORNING
Panning through the countryside; fresh morning. Birds chirping, soft piano music being played in the background.
ELIZA (V.O)
Many people in life have a sense of direction and know
what they want their future to hold, apparently, not me.
I seem to be going nowhere and at the age of 18, I have
nothing to say for myself; no achievements, nothing, not even
a library card or a bus pass. Even old people have those, clearly...
my - life - is - irrelevant.
I've never had a boyfriend - well, of course, I've dabbled in the
occasional 2 week fling, but nothing serious,
nothing significant; never broken a bone, never even been
to hospital, besides of course when I entered the world and left the
safety and comfort of my mother's womb.
As Gandhi said, "I don't have a message. My message
is my life." and "When I despair, I remember that truth and
love have always won. There have been tyrants, and murderers,
and for a time they can seem invincible, but in the end
they always fall.
Think of it...always."
It is only when I think of those who have less than me
that I realise how much I do have;
a functional family who supports me, a good education, friends who love me...
Need I say more? I'm a pessimistic, optimistic, naïve, melodramatic,
shy and pathetic teenager, who wants nothing more than to find
her meaning in life. But I have no idea how to go about it.
I'm waiting for a revelation, anything, hit me by a bus
and kick me in the teeth! Anything.

***And that's when it happened, it came from nowhere
and nobody could have foreseen it. A car spun off
the road, hit the verge and the driver lost control.
Things would be so vert different if it hadn't happened
but I suppose it was my destiny and
that's how my life changed for good.

"This life is what you make it. No matter what, you're
going to mess up sometimes, it's a universal truth.
But the good part is you get to decide how you're
going to mess it up. Just because you fail once, doesn't
mean you're gonna fail at everything.
Keep trying, hold on, and always, always, always believe

in yourself."***
The 'starred; (*) pieces of text indicate the parts of the script that I have added to the inital draft. The second/final paragraph is a quote taken from Marilyn Monroe and it bares great signficance to the script because it is quite a mature and life-evaluating quote which is very influential.

FILMING WEEK

This week I have been busy with the camera. Filming took place on a field/verge near my house, which is an ideal place because of the lack of traffic and disruption. I am happy with all of my footage and feel that it will enable me to create an effective yet simple film opening; being that it relies solely upon the interest of the audience and the factor of the unknown - not knowing what will happen after the first 2minutes.
I ended up filming at around 3.00pm because the light/sky was perfect and the ground wasn't too wet from the morning dew. I particularly like the point-of-view shots because the audience is able to watch the character's perspective; and the glare of the sun on the camera because it conveys connotations of purity and innocence, which are prominent themes in my film. I also filmed the audio of the narration, which took several takes for each part, to get it just right. I feel quietly confident with my progress so far. Fingers crossed!

The Perks of Being a Wallflower...

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is an "epistolary novel written by American novelist Stephen Chbosky. It was published on February 1, 1999 by MTV. The story is narrated by a teenager who goes by the alias of "Charlie"; he describes various scenes in his life by writing a series of letters to an anonymous person, whom he does not know personally." The male protagonist Charlie is a teenager who struggles with teenage adolescence.
The story explores topics such as introversion and awkward experiences and confrontations of adolescence; also touching briefly on drug use and Charlie's experiences with it.
The reason why I have chosen to research this film is because within the novel's progression, various works of literature and film are heavily referenced and their meanings are discussed frequently, particularly in helping Charlie to understand the reality of teenage life and within his education. This links to my media film opening because of my references to Gandhi and Marilyn Monroe.

Colour and Lighting...

The previous post has taught me that when I come to edit my media film I will most likely manipulate the brightness/contrast, gamma, curves of the shots because by simply doing this, a completely different mood is able to be conveyed to the audience. This will also work particularly with my opening sequence because of the nature scenes with the trees (and if the snow is still around next week then it can be incorporated too!)

Looking at the effect of lighting and colour

ADJUSTING CURVES
LOW LIGHTING
GAMMA
SATURATION
ORIGINAL COPY
HIGH LIGHTING

In my lesson I have been unable to do any filming or editing due to lack of technology and so I have been editing photos on Adobe Photoshop CS4 to explore the effect of lighting and colours within a shot. I played around with adjusting the curves, lighting, gamma, saturation, exposure and vibrance. I particularly like working with Adobe Photoshop because I have used the software before and being able to manipulate an image in order to change the impact of an image. My favourite image is the edit which has been fully saturated into black and white because the tree gives across quite a sinister mood; in comparison to the calm and tranquil mood of the original image.

Camera Shots

EWS (Extreme Wide Shot) - The view is so far from the subject that he/she isn't even visible. Often used as an establishing shot
VWS (Very Wide Shot) - The subject is visible (barely), but the emphasis is still on placing him in his environment
WS (Wide Shot) - The subject takes up the full frame, or at least as much as comfortably possible.
i.e. long shot, full shot

MS (Mid Shot) - Shows some part of the subject in more detail while still giving an impression of the whole subject
MCU (Medium Close Up) - Half way between a MS and a CU
CU (Close Up) - A certain feature or part of the subject takes up the whole frame
ECU (Extreme Close Up) - The ECU gets right in and shows extreme detail
Cut-In - Shows some (other) part of the subject in detail
Cut-Away - A shot of something other than the subject
Two-Shot -
A shot of two people, framed similarly to a mid shot

Over-The-Shoulder Shot - Looking from behind a person at the subject
Point-of-View Shot - Shows a view from the subject's perspective
Weather Shot - The subject is the weather. Can be used for other purposes, i.e. background for graphics.

In my media film I am choosing to not reveal the main character in the opening sequence in order to allow the audience to want to watch on, particularly because after the title sequence she will be in hospital and so her appearance may not be as it was before. The audience is able to empathise with her character and is curious as to how the accident has affected her life.
Therefore the main shots that I will be using will be Establishing Shots; in order for the audience to identify the location and Point-of-View Shots; which will enable the audience to be in her perspective; Weather Shots because my opening will be quite 'nature-based' in order for the audience to be led into a false sense of security, tranquillity and calm; before she meets her untimely accident which will be quite shocking but also very ambiguous. This links well with my Ident; Juxtaposed Productions, the definition of 'juxtaposition' being "an act or instance of placing close together or side by side, especially for comparison or contrast."
This then eliminates the need for costumes because they will not be seen in the opening sequence however, there will be props that I choose to include that hold great significance.

Review on narration

Remember Me is a 2010 American romantic, coming-of-age drama film directed by Allen Coulter, with the screenplay by Will Fetters. The cast includes Robert Pattinson, Emilie de Ravin, Chris Cooper, Lena Olin and Pierce Brosnan. The film was released March 12th 2010, had a budget of $16million and went on to take in $56,223,951 at the Box Office. The distributor was Summit Entertainment.
I have chosen to look at this film because the main character Tyler in the opening gives the insightful quote; "Gandhi said that whatever you do in life will be insignificant but it is very important that you do it...". This quote relates to my media film because I am intrigued by the use of famous historical figures whose words are able to have a great and significant impact upon peoples lives.
When his character is first seen, the script describes him as TYLER ROTH, early twenties, handsome, looking haggard. He is sitting on the floor, shirtless, bed head, wrapped in a blanket.

Copyright music...

COPYRIGHT-
Wikipedia definition - "literally, 'the right to copy.' Prior to 1886, no effective international law of copyright existed. The first major international copyright law conventions were the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works created in 1886. It is not within the scope of this document to examine the various changes, additions, and ancillary agreements to the Berne Convention. Beginning in 1976, copyright protection in the United States has been extended to a work of music immediately after it is created. Legal protection is extended to the work without the need to register it with the U.S. Copyright office. A work must be registered, however, before a copyright owner may bring suit against a party which has allegedly infringed on this original work."

Music licensing is the licensed use of copyrighted music. It is intended to ensure that the creators of musical works get paid for their work. A purchaser of recorded music owns the media on which the music is stored, rather than the music itself. A purchaser has limited rights to use and reproduce the recorded work without a separately arranged agreement.

Copyright infringement is the unauthorized or prohibited use of works under copyright, infringing the copyright holder's exclusive rights, such as the right to reproduce or perform the copyrighted work, or to make derivative works. It often refers to copying intellectual property without written permission from the copyright holder, which is typically a publisher or other business representing or assigned by the work's creator.

Plans for filming...SCHEDULE

Try and get the bulk of the filming done on Sunday 29th January!!!

My Ident - Juxtaposed Productions

This is the ident that I have created using Adobe AfterEffects that I intend to use for my media film. I chose to keep it fairly simple because I did not want it to detract from the image of the film and for it to remain fairly impartial and uninfluencial upon the audience.
I particularly like the font that I used because it is interesting and adds more depth to the ident.

Teletubbies

For this task we had to remake the opening title sequence for the Teletubbies. We were given a similar background image of the sky, the foreground and the baby's face; we then had to create the shape of the sun and create the sequence so that it flowed accordingly to the original sequence.

First AfterEffects Experiment - Anatomy of a Murder

This was my first introduction to using Adobe AfterEffects CS4 and we were given the task of creating a title sequence for 'Anatomy of a Murder'. We had to create the shapes and text and then design the sequence as we thought appropriate and fitting.
I enjoyed the task because it was a good, in-depth introduction to the software and I felt comfortable with using it afterwards.

Ideal props to include in my film opening...

Location for filming...

LITTLE ELLINGHAM, NORFOLK

I have chosen to do my filming in my village because the fields and location is very ideal and is quite isolated, so I do not have to worry about the interruption of lots of cars and loud background noises.

Narration...

A narrator, within any story, is the fictional or non-fictional, personal or impersonal entity who tells the story to the audience. When the narrator is also a character within the story, he or she is sometimes known as the viewpoint character. The narrator is one of the three entities responsible for story-telling of any kind. The others are the author and audience; the latter called the 'reader' when referring specifically to literature.

In the case of my media film, I am using narration through Eliza, therefore making her the viewpoint character. The effect of doing this is that straight away the audience is able to relate to and empathise with her character, just through her dialogue.

A narrator may tell the story from his own point of view (as a fictive entity) or from the point of view of one of the characters in the story. The act or process of this is referred to as narration. Along with exposition, argumentation, and description, narration (broadly defined) is one of four rhetorical modes of discourse. More narrowly defined, narration is the fiction-writing mode whereby the narrator communicates directly to the reader.

In my media film, I have chosen to not show the character of Eliza within the opening sequence to establish an element of the unknown for the audience. The aim of my opening is to leave the audience asking questions and to want to watch further, which is or should be the aim of all film-makers.
